nr: 344 /  Ural M72 met zijspan

The engine was born in 193 as BMW R71, moved to Russia and was named M-72. Half way the 30's Russia started modernising their armed forces, and started looking to replace their old engines. The lack of experience and time, forced them to look towards the west. the BMW met the requirements of those days. There are several stories as how this played out. Many arguments are there, to conclude the M-72 was completely copiedfrom the BMW. In 1941 the first engines were produced. The M refers to Moscow, coding the City of production acording to a production scheme. from 1951, the M-72 engine was also build in Kiev, at the KMZ factory, known to us as Dnepr. Later, Ural "IMZ"and Dnepr were renamed KMZ. When a large demand for simple and easy to maintaine engines rises, after the war of 57, the M-72 can no longer keep up. KMZ continued building the M-72 till 1961, as M72-M
