nr: 16 / 1971 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III AUT. Oldtimer
1971 was the golden jubilee of the Lincoln brand and the third and final year of production of the Mark III. Sales were better than ever, with 27,091 almost equal to the Eldorados, a harbinger of the new decade.
Little has changed from the 1970 model; tinted glass became standard, as did automatic climate control air conditioning and SureTrak anti-lock brakes. High-back seats became standard and a rare floor console was made available on special order. Horsepower remained unchanged at 365, but the 460 CID V8 engine got a more advanced thermostatic air purifier with associated ductwork.
In the second annual King of the Hill contest, Motor Trend (July 1971) gave the Continental Mark III the nod again by a larger margin than 1970, despite it being in fact a warmed-up 1968 model, while the Cadillac was brand new from the ground. M/T noted that the Mark III's leather interior was much more luxurious and detailed than the nylon fabric of the test Eldorado, and that the Continental's real wood dashboard trim was much more attractive than the Cadillac's.
